ADHD – Organization Through Disorganization

By Robert D Hawkins -

We all know the primary symptoms of ADHD; inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. One of the common traits produced by these primary symptoms is poor organizational skills. Most have been told that they really need to clean up their work areas, desks, or be more conventional in their approach to organizing. But could this actually prove counterproductive to someone with ADHD?

Remember that ADHD is a biological condition of the brain. Those with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity see things in a different way than the rest of us. They are unconventional not by choice but because genetically they are slightly different. Most adults with ADHD have had the same set of challenges since they were children and many have learned to adapt. They have learned to manage their weaknesses and highlight their strengths. In many cases the hyperactivity that was so prominent in their early years has been redirected or become less prominent. They have learned to manage or even thrive in the mist of disorganization or chaos.

Walk with me though a short story about a successful business acquaintance that had ADHD and is a poster child for organization through disorganization.

Jerry was a great guy and a very successful business person who was a millionaire many times over. He was an independent thinker who liked to do things his way, or as he put it the “Jerry Way”. His staff was made up of very organized individuals who gave the impression that his company was on the cutting edge of organizational business excellence. That was until you made your way to the inner sanctum of his empire; Jerry’s office. His office always looked like a whirlwind was allowed to randomly place files, folders, and important documents in odd and unusual places. In fact I would venture to say that less than 5% of his personal documents were organized in a conventional way but if you were to ask him for a document he knew exactly where to find it. When I asked him about his filing system he told me that once he put something away he had trouble remembering anything about it.

The moral to this story is that the ADHD personality not only deals with disorganization well, but often thrives because of it. They may feel more comfortable in an area where things are not quite so well organized. In fact taking disorganization away from them may distract from their creativity. So if you are one of the millions of adults struggling with ADHD that feels comfortable with the clutter, don’t be so quick to eliminate it.

Additionally, many of those with ADHD who are finding organization through disorganization are opting for natural ADHD supplements to help them relieve such problematic symptoms as erratic behavior and inattention.
