Adult attention deficit disorder medications usually prescribed is Adderall which is a stimulant that increases certain chemicals in the body that helps contain the symptoms of ADD. Adderall has a once daily tablet (timed released) or capsule that should not be crushed, chewed, or opened.
Catapres (clonidine) is used to treat ADD and high blood pressure. This medication is an alternative to stimulants and works by decreasing hyperactive behaviors, but does not help becoming distracted as stimulants can.
Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) is habit forming. You can become physically and psychologically dependent and withdrawal effects can occur if you stop taking it after only several weeks’ use. Talk to your doctor before stopping this medication.
Dextrostat (dextroamphetamine) can decrease becoming distracted, impulsive, and hyperactive and increases attention span. This medicine is habit forming and should not be stopped suddenly. Do not use with MAOI’s. If you are taking insulin or other diabetes medications you may need to adjust them. Antidepressants can decrease the results of Dextrostat and taking more than one medication at a time may cause a negative reaction.
Ritalin (methylphenidate) should not be taken unless you talk to your doctor about the following conditions; anxiety, glaucoma, Tourette’s syndrome, depression, mental illness, and seizure disorders, high blood pressure, a history of alcohol or drug abuse. Side effects can include allergic reactions, irregular or fast heartbeat, chest pains, high blood pressure, stuttering, confusion, hallucinations and liver damage.
Other adult attention deficit disorder medications are on the market but also alternatives you can have a look at as well. Among them are diet, behavior modification, exercise, targeted use of certain homeopathic remedies and vitamins.
